Something Infinitely Richer (New Year’s Meditation) …

We spend January 1st walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives … not looking for flaws but for potential.
Ellen Goodman

Interruption Is God’s Invitation

We must be ready to allow ourselves to be interrupted by God. God will be constantly crossing our paths and cancelling our plans by sending us people with claims and petitions. We may pass them by, preoccupied with our more important tasks, as the priest passed by the man who had fallen among thieves, perhaps — reading the Bible. When we do that we pass by the visible sign of the Cross raised athwart our path to show us that, not our way, but God’s way must be done. It is strange fact that Christians and even ministers frequently consider their work so important and urgent that they will allow nothing to disturb them. They think they are doing God a service in this, but actually they are disdaining God’s “crooked yet straight path” (Gottfried Arnold). They do not want a life that is crossed and balked. But it is part of the discipline of humility that we must not spare our hand where it can perform a service and that we do not assume that our schedule is our own to manage, but allow it to be arranged by God. Give Up All The Other Worlds Except The One To Which You Belong (New Year’s Eve) …

You must learn one thing.
The world was made to be free in.

Give up all the other worlds
except the one to which you belong.

Sometimes it takes darkness and the sweet
confinement of your aloneness
to learn

anything or anyone
that does not bring you alive

is too small for you.
―David Whyte from The House of Belonging

The Subtle Art of Detachment

We are like children building a sand castle. We embellish it with beautiful shells, bits of driftwood, and pieces of colored glass. The castle is ours, off limits to others. We’re willing to attack if others threaten to hurt it. Yet despite all our attachment, we know that the tide will inevitably come in and sweep the sand castle away. The trick is to enjoy it fully but without clinging, and when the time comes, let it dissolve back into the sea. The Work Of Christmas (New Years Meditation) …

“The light shines on in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 5) I love the confident note of hope this verse sounds. On the one hand, it is the declaration of a state of fact: light is stronger than darkness. At the same time, it is also a promise: even when it seems otherwise – and even the briefest scan of the headlines can make it seem otherwise – yet the light continues to shine and the darkness has neither overcome nor understood it …  Continue reading “The Work Of Christmas (New Years Meditation) …”

Daily Meditation – Online Resources, Books and Kindle eBooks …

Daily meditation resources can be a helpful way to spending time in quiet contemplation everyday.   Because we are all different and because each of us has a unique relationship with God, no one method will work for everyone.  Below are a selection of books and online resources to help you along the path. Experiment until you find the time of day and format that helps you the most.

It is important to remember as you try to grow closer to God is that God is already reaching out to you. God is the one who gives you the desire to grow, and God wants you to grow. You just keep showing up, even when you don’t particularly feel holy or loving or centered. And you can trust that if you do so, God will show up, too.

A Prayer for Daily Insight

Open my eyes, God. Help me to perceive what I have ignored, to uncover what I have forgotten, to find what I have been searching for. Remind me that I don’t have to journey far to discover something new, for miracles surround me, blessings and holiness abound. And You are near.
Amen.

Questions That Have No Right to Go Away (New Year’s Meditation) …

What is giving me life?
What is saving my life?
What does it mean to be human?

— Barbara Brown Taylor (adapted from Super Soul Sunday Conversation with Oprah Winfrey, Season 5, Episode 522 | Aired on 11/09/14)

This Is Your Life

I was in Europe leading a retreat in a lush vineyard on an Italian hillside. Each morning the men and women attending the retreat gathered outside on the grass in a circle and repeated the simple words that a young man was teaching: Continue reading “Questions That Have No Right to Go Away (New Year’s Meditation) …”
